Fragments of the Heart at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center will be Nuni's first solo exhibition in which she will be showcasing her paintings from the last two years. The show is open to public from September 2 - October 30, 2016. The artist’s reception will be held on Friday, October 14 from 7-9pm.
The paintings selected for my first solo show, Fragments of the Heart, are pieces which embody fragments of my most intimate memories and emotions throughout adulthood.
My earlier series of paintings called the Nature Series (2014) are sculptural paintings which elude to nature. Tiny nails and sequins, hammered in through a repetitive process, are fundamental components in these circular pieces. Nails become a symbol of violence and pain while simultaneously adding to the beauty of each piece. Creating these pieces had a cathartic effect for me as I realized through the process that even the most painful stories and experiences are necessary components that make us strong and beautiful.
My most recent series of paintings has been inspired by my cat Minnie who was rescued while she was a stray kitten. Minnie has embroidered my heart with her love and cuteness while captivating me with her charm. Capturing her cuteness through my paintings has been a great source of inspiration for me. I enjoy depicting the push-and-pull relationship between the motherly “protector” and the cute “protected”. The protected needs love and attention from the protector; ironically, she takes on the more powerful role in the hierarchical relationship by demanding care.
The needle-felted soft sculpture attachments to paintings are meant to transform the shape of the conventionally rectangular canvas into a cuter and friendlier form, inviting viewers to come closer to touch the painting. However, the traditional notion of artwork as something to be admired at from a distance may stop the viewer from acting on his or her desires, creating a sense of happiness and frustration at the same time. This push-and-pull relationship between the subject and the cute is what I am most excited about.
